Acrylic paintings by Colleen Crinklaw
January 2010 at Terra Bella Bakery•Café

Colleen Crinklaw is an Alaskan artist venturing into acrylic for the first time in a number of years. She lives in Anchorage as a student and semi-professional stand-up comedian, performing in various venues throughout Alaska. Heavily influenced by the Dutch Impressionists and the Spanish Surrealists, Colleen’s art tends to be a blend of those movements, incorporating distortion of perspective with bright color palettes and thematic elements. Her website is onefunnybroad.com.

One thing travel consistently teaches me is gratefulness. The tumult of crowded sidewalks, missed flight connections, bad food, sore feet, unbearable heat, and impenetrable language barriers can blind me to the random miracle that makes it all worthwhile: a stunning sunset, the heady scent of sage in the desert, the green symmetry of grape arbors, or the sidelong cast of light on a Venetian canal.

Travel returns me to some childlike state where, if I can remain open and present, I will always find a visual treasure that makes the struggle worthwhile and then some. Usually, the moment is made incredible simply because of the light, which is always momentary and fleeting. Photography is my way of preserving the moment and staying grateful once I have returned home. I hope these images inspire you to both travel and gratefulness. ~Rick Vollertsen
